DEFINITION:
A blog, which is short for web log, is series of articles usually written in a slightly informal tone. While many blogs are online personal journals, blogs cover the full range from personal to news to business with subject matter that ranges from personal to serious to humorous to creative.

CONNECTION:
Reading and participating in others blogs has become a fun past time of mine. Since creating my blog for this class I have enjoyed the outlet of sharing with others what is taking place in my classroom. Blogging is a great tool for teachers to share and collaborate on new and innovative ideas.



Podcast:
DEFINITION:
"The distribution of audio and video "shows" across the Internet, such as a video blog or an Internet radio show. Like blogs, they can range in subject matter from personal to business and serious to entertaining."

CONNECTION: My initial reaction was that there was no place for it in the early ed. classroom. After learning more I see it as a great tool for students to hear their voice, edit and re-record their works. Sharing books they have written on podcast motivates my students to do their best. The "practice" enables the student to reinforce what it is they are writing about.

Webcast: 

DEFINITION:
"A broadcast that takes place over the web and uses both audio and visual effects. Web casts are often interactive."

CONNECTION:

For example, a web-based conferece that sends a presentation with charts and graphs to go alongside the speech or presentation. Students from different classes, different parts of the world can work together to present a common project. For example if my student was doing a presentation comparing the differences between winter in North Carolina and Mexico they could collaborate with a student that lives in Mexico and make a joint presentation.

DEFINITION: “A learning activity used by educators where learners read, analyze and synthesize information using the world wide web.”

CONNECTION: WebQuests are a wonderful way to involve students in a learning adventure. What student doesn't want an adventure. Now that I have learned how simple they are to make I will challenge myself to create various webquests to enhance my units of study.

Collaboration/YouTube/Virtual World/Avatar:

 

DEFINITION:
1. the act of working with another or others on a joint project
 2. something created by working jointly with another or others

CONNECTION: 
Group projects and working with others in the early ed. classroom helps establish social skills that are needing to be strengthened in the young child.

DEFINITION:

one of many video sharing sites. It is currently the largest and owned by Google. “Like many Web 2.0 tools and resources; YouTube is a highly interesting social phenomenon. Created in mid-February 2005, it soon attracted millions of daily visitors.”

CONNECTION:
 Personal accounts can be created which will allow me as a teacher to generate content to my students see live action of lessons instead of simply reading about it in a textbook.

CONNECTION:

Virtual Worlds represent a powerful new media for instruction and education. By using a virtual world in the classroom I can expose my children to real life experiences without ever leaving the 4 walls of my classroom.

  Avatar:   
DEFINITION: The visual (oftentimes cartoonish) representation of a person in a virtual world or virtual chat room. “An avatar is the graphical representation of the user or the user's alter or character. It may take either a three-dimensional form, as in games or virtual worlds, or a two-dimensional form as an icon in Internet forums and other online communities."

CONNECTION:
When participating in online communities or virtual worlds and/or chat rooms, may parents of students are concerned about safety while their child is on the Internet. Avatars help to create some sort of anonymity for my students.
